From on-board communications to a vertical ship, we’ve been keeping an eye on all the most interesting stories from the maritime industry. Here’s a selection of articles from the past week:

‘Vertical ship’ celebrates 50 years at sea – The Floating Instrument Platform (FLIP), a research vessel which can move from a horizontal position to a vertical one, celebrated its 50th birthday this week, reports the BBC. Owned by the US Navy, the unique vessel flips to the vertical position by pumping 700 tonnes of water into one end of the ship while pumping air into the other end. The vessel is used for acoustic research and studying meteorology, oceanography and air-sea interactions.
